Essentials of the Week

This week felt like it flew by and moved in slow motion all at once. I’ve been stuck in bed for three (going on four) days now with a terrible sinus infection, working from home and binge-watching a mixture of cartoons and dramas. Has anyone else seen The Good Doctor on ABC?! I don’t know how I’ve been missing out on this show all this time, but it’s officially a new favorite of mine. Perhaps I was too distracted by my lifelong love for Grey’s Anatomy to notice another doctor show in the mix.

 

If you haven’t seen it, it’s a great surgical drama starring a character who is incredibly brilliant, and also happens to have autism; this makes his interactions with patients a little bit rough around the edges, but it’s incredibly well done. I recommend it (and it’s on Hulu!)

 

I wouldn’t exactly call this my most productive week of all time, but I’m hoping to finally be out of bed and amongst society again later this afternoon. I think if I spend another day in bed I’m going to become permanently fused to my comforter!

 

That said, with all my time spent cooped up I’ve found so many great things to share with y’all this Friday to kick off your weekends! Here are my essentials of the week:

 

 

one | the true definition of love

I’m a firm believer that the best place to learn and observe truly beautiful relationships is among the elderly. Some of the most endearing acts and purest loves I’ve ever witnessed have been from married couples who are well into their 80’s and beyond. It’s no surprise that many of them have been together for more than half of their lives. This incredible video shows a man learning a remarkable skill for the woman he loves (I don’t want to spoil it, but it’s worth a quick watch!)

 

two | fifteen pumpkin recipes to give you your basic fall fix

Unpopular opinion – I’m actually not a huge fan of pumpkin. I love other fall scents and flavors, especially cinnamon, but pumpkin/pumpkin spice has never quite been my thing. That said, I know I’m in the minority here, so in case you’re like me and anxiously awaiting the official arrival of fall, here are fifteen recipes to help you get into the seasonal spirit.

 

three | the book you must add to your reading list ASAP

I mentioned this book a while back in one of my reading roundup posts (you can catch my other book recommendations here, or in the lifestyle tab at the top of this page under books!). It recently became a new lifetime drama with Penn Badgely (aka Dan Humphry from Gossip Girl) – so now is the perfect time to move it to the top of your list and catch up on the first few episodes! It’s actually a two-book series, and I couldn’t put it down for even a moment. It’s a crime thriller with a twist; you are reading it from the perspective of the criminal!

 

four | this anti-aging trick could be…aging you

I’m only just recently dipping my toe in the waters of skincare (especially preventative skincare as I get older). I’m constantly on the hunt for articles, research, and expert opinions to help me make informed decisions on the topic. With sensitive and highly allergic skin like mine, I have to do excessive research before trying anything…and even then, it’s a risk. I was pretty shocked to see this article talking about how preventative botox is actually aging skin more. I’ve never had a strong opinion on whether or not botox is something I’d eventually try, but this has me thinking twice for sure!
